Respite provides temporary or short-term care for adults and children with disabilities or special needs. Care can be utilized on a regular or irregular basis and can be provided by family members, friends, or skilled care providers.

Why is Respite Important?

  1. Reduces stress for the families and caregivers
  2. Helps families cope through crisis
  3. Increases self-esteem
  4. Improves family abilities
  5. Strengthens the family

How Respite works

Respite allows the family to choose their provider and how they would like to spend their respite dollars. This program eliminates all related employment tax withholdings obligations and tax reporting requirements. The provider receives reimbursement by submitting their voucher to the Community Mental Health, for approval, which in return sends the voucher to our office for processing of payment. Checks are distributed by our office on a weekly basis.

The limits of the 2010 tax code for respite state:

1. All employees within a calendar quarter (Jan-March, April-June, July-Sept, Oct-Dec) must not earn more than $1,000.

2. Any single employee within a calendar year (Jan-Dec) must not earn more than $1,700.

It is in your best interest to monitor the funds you use through respite. If you exceed these limits we are required by law to begin withholding taxes.
