| Self Determination is a program offered to persons with speical needs to allow them to have control, freedom, and responsibility in their life. It is based on four principals... FREEDOM: The ability for individuals, with assistance from allies, to plan a life based on acquiring necessary supports in desirable ways, rather than purchasing a program. This includes the freedom to choose where and with whom one lives, who and how to connect in ones community, the opportunity to contribute in ones own way, and the development of a personal lifestyle. AUTHORITY: The assurance and authority for a person to control a certain sum of dollars in order to purchase supports, with the backing of their allies as needed. SUPPORT: The arranging of resources and personnel, both formal and informal, to assist the person in developing a life dream, taking steps to reach toward that dream and living his/her desired life in the community, rich in community associations and contributions. RESPONSIBILITY: The acceptance of a valued role by the person in the community through the employment, affiliations, spiritual development, and caring for others, as well as accountability for spending public dollars in ways that are life-enhancing.(1) Source: (1) Mental Health and Substance Abuse Administration Michigan Department of Community Health.
How do we Help? Each individual on the self determination program has a budget; our office handles, manages, and accounts for the funds in the budget. We keep a record of all documentation and maintain monthly financial reports for each self determination participant. We assist you in processing payments for services that you have requested and help participants to understand all documentation and financial records.
